You have a very small window for self-defense, after that it’s just revenge.

No, it’s not how it works.

The core principles of self-defense are a) doing the least possible damage, and b) aiming to evade the situation. The time frame is irrelevant. If someone slaps you and you beat them to a pulp, it’s not self defense even if you did it right away.

This is why we need to reframe legislation in terms of self defense in the case of domestic abuse, for example. A woman who kills her abusive husband in his sleep after being ignored several times by the police, and knowing that leaving an abusive relationship is usually the trigger that turns the abuser murderous, has done the least damage she can to ensure her safety. If the authorities had done their job properly, she wouldn’t have been forced to get to this point.

Or look at cases like Marissa Alexander’s. She did everything right. She gave a verbal warning and then fired a warning shot, hurting no one, and was still framed for reckless endangerment, because the justice system is not designed to allow vulnerable populations to defend themselves. This is why Alexander was arrested but every murderous cop who guns down an innocent black person gets to claim he “feared for his life” and walk away free.

Self defense is not retribution. The motivation matters, and you gotta analyze each situation to see if the amount of damage done is consistent with one wanting to protect their life versus one wanting retribution.

i came across this and imma butt in bc i happen to know a fair amnt abt this topic! but yeah, op’s classification of self-defense is defo harmful toward women who eliminate abusers. even during confrontational homicides where she kills while being attacked, most of the time she still finds herself in trouble bc 1) women almost exclusively kill larger, more powerful violent males with weapons and 2) it’s often not just one or two blows, but fifteen or thirty bc she was fucking scared.

women who eliminate abusers as seen as vengeful during the non-confrontational homicides like when he’s sleeping bc she wasn’t being attacked in that moment despite the fact she knows the lull in violence is just that– a lull – he’s proven to her he’ll be violent again. but they’re also seen as vengeful even during the confrontational homicides bc the use of a weapon and potentially how many times she used is considered “excessive” without any regard to the size/power differences and the environmental context of ongoing abuse she is responding within. vengeance has not shit to do w it and the broad application of the “small-window” ideology is extremely harmful for abused women who resort to homicide.

Hon if he hates OSHA you gotta run and run fast

I don’t care if you’re the most anti-government anarcho-communist in the Western World, if he hates OSHA you gotta run

If your man looks at the dudes whose job is making sure workers don’t kill themselves or get killed and goes “Fuck those guys” then he is NOT going to be a good man to you

If he bitches and complains that OSHA is a bunch of bureaucrats that bitch for a living, he is absolutely the kind of dude who doesn’t wear basic PPE. Let that inform your opinion of him.

Murmurmur OSHA is government and I hate the government blah blah dude this is a fucking safety inspector. This isn’t your local senator that takes cash from oil execs. This isn’t your shitass local representative that votes to bomb kids. This is a fucking safety inspector here to tell you that sadly you are not allowed to take up valuable hospital space because you decided to leave your skull exposed as you ascended the tippy top of the ladder.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Eating while on shift is not permitted, staff are told. “If the system detects no keyboard stroke and mouse click, it will show you as idle for that particular duration, and it will be reported to your supervisor. So please avoid hampering your productivity.”

A training video about the webcam system, seen by the Guardian, says it “monitors and tracks real-time employee behaviour and detects any violations to pre-set business rules, and sends real-time alerts to managers to take corrective actions immediately”.

Capitalism is so exhausting

Fuck this

This is insane.

Capitalism is so innovative /s

Hi!  Want to completely fuck the keyboard-tracking system in the ass?  Want to do it in a way that they literally cannot do anything about without disabling primary Windows functions?

Step 1: Open Notepad.

Step 2: Copy the following text, line for line, omitting only the — that caps either end of it.

Dim objResult

Set objShell = WScript.CreateObject(“WScript.Shell”)

Do While True
  objResult = objShell.sendkeys(“{NUMLOCK}{NUMLOCK}”)
  Wscript.Sleep (6000)
Loop

Step 3: Save this as whatever.vbs, put it somewhere you can access easily, and double click it when you start your computer.

What does this do?

This runs a very basic script, and every six seconds, your computer will double-tap the NumLock key (i.e., turn it on, and then off) in a single instant.  This counts as a key-press, occurs with a key that shouldn’t affect most things that you’re doing, occurs with no gap between them even if it could affect things you’re doing, and should prevent this kind of BS from engaging.  As an aside, this will also prevent your computer from automatically locking itself, so take that into account if you need to manually lock your computer when going to lunch or whatever.

Damn, Tumblr back at it. Now we got coders coming in to save the day.

Tumblr’s collective hate for capitalism is astounding every time but damn if I don’t love it

For all my call center readers.
